Higher Education and Democratic Culture

This book, which addresses higher education for a democratic culture, constitutes the eighth in the Council of Europe's Higher Education series. The book is a direct result of the forum held in June 2006 on higher education for citizenship, human rights, and sustainability. The forum was part of the Council of Europe's long-standing commitment to the field of human rights and democratic citizenship education. The book complements the previous work on social responsibility for higher education and research, which led to the recommendations made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to its member states in 2007. If our goal is to work towards sustainable democratic societies, the responsibility of public authorities for a high-quality higher education system must go hand in hand with the responsibility of higher education institutions for the progress of society.
