Faculty of Communication 11th International Communication Days Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism Symposium Abstracts Book
The International Communication Days held its eleventh edition this year. The title of the symposium, which is held annually with international participation, was Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism. As is known, the world is currently experiencing the fourth industrial revolution. Digital technologies have entered all areas of life, and the adaptation process is occurring very rapidly. Especially with the Covid-19 pandemic, the process has gained incredible momentum. Digital technologies, which were used in certain sectors, have rapidly integrated into all aspects of daily life. Colonialism, which has affected all periods of human history as a fundamental problem, is also transforming and expanding its influence with digitalization. At the core of the digital age lies information, and therefore data. For this reason, the colonialism of the digital age operates through information and data. Colonial tendencies from countries and societies that are strong in terms of information production towards others continue at full speed. The gap between those who produce information and possess data accumulation and those who do not possess the same power is widening. This leads to results that further solidify the problem of inequality in the world. Colonialism operating through information and data, and strengthening inequality, is becoming a significant problem in the world of the digital age. The conflicts, wars, and struggles of the new era are taking place around digital technologies.
At the symposium titled Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism, hosted by Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, this contemporary world problem was discussed from various perspectives. Renowned academics, researchers, and scientists came together within the scope of the symposium to address the problems of the digital age world along the lines of inequality and colonialism, and to try to develop solutions to these problems.
The academic and media reflections of the symposium, which received approximately 300 paper submissions from domestic and international universities, were quite satisfactory. The realization of such a comprehensive symposium is undoubtedly possible through dedicated teamwork. In this regard, Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication has a highly experienced team.
Üsküdar University International Communication Days is a scientific event that belongs to the entire communication community and academia, held annually with international participation under a different theme.
