Kemal ARIKAN


Born in Kahramanmaraş in 1960. His father was a judge. Due to his father's civil service, he completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in various cities and towns across the country. After graduating from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1985, he served his mandatory service at Ağrı State Hospital until 1986. He began his psychiatry specialization at Bakırköy Hospital for Mental and Neurological Diseases. He transferred to Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1988. Between 1989-1992, he continued his specialization training in the United States, having received a TÜBİTAK scholarship. He became a specialist in 1992 and started working in the Department of Psychiatry at Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. He became an associate professor in 1993. In the same year, he was appointed as the "World Health Organization, Mental Health Department, International Electrophysiological Research Projects Field Monitor and Turkey Central Researcher." In 1988, he became a faculty member in the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry branch. He became a professor of psychiatry in 1999. He completed his Biostatistics doctorate in 2001. Alongside his clinical work in the Department of Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry branch at Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, he provided teaching, research, and services to physicians working in other medical branches. Since 2017, he has been serving as the chairman of the ethics committee and research coordinator at Üsküdar University.

He currently has 150 works published and accepted for publication in domestic and foreign journals and books indexed in SCI, SSCI, and AHI. He is one of the editors of the journal Clinical EEG and Neuroscience. He also edits Yeni Symposium, one of Turkey's most established journals. He is an active member of many national and international scientific associations and organizations. Among these, he organized the 2001 meeting of the ECNS (EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society) in Turkey.

Chess, swimming, and playing the bağlama are his main hobbies. He is married and has two children.
