The Development of the Child’s Brain
Parallel to specialization in medicine, we tend to view the stages of human life as disconnected from one another, and we maintain this fragmented approach when addressing diseases. Although there may be professional reasons behind this separation, assigning brain-related facts and disorders to pediatric neurology until age 10–11 and to adult neurology thereafter is not logically consistent with biological developmental theory. The development of the human brain and the emergence of neurological disorders form a continuous process, with each age connected to the next.
This disconnection creates challenges both in medical education and in fields such as speech and language therapy. Although the author is trained in adult neurology, he is aware that many aspects of brain development—from the prenatal period onward—are closely linked with adolescence and adulthood. For this reason, he felt compelled to write a book that highlights the continuous and uninterrupted structure of brain biology and neurological disorders.
