Phytotherapy – Medicinal Plants

The use of medicinal plants as medicine is as old as human history. Folk medicine (phytotherapy) began with the first person who applied plant sap to a wound and saw positive results from this application. Early humans knew that plants had healing powers. For example; they tried to understand if plants were medicinal or poisonous by chewing on different organs and parts of plants such as flowers, fruits, seeds, stems, leaves, roots, and bark, and by their taste and smell.

Turkey's extreme richness in biological diversity, being a natural pharmacy, and our people's fondness for medicinal plants locally have accelerated Phytotherapy studies. This supplementary textbook, prepared primarily for our students, is intended to provide our students, authorized practitioners who will work in the field of Phytotherapy and in this area, and information based on scientific data about the plants used in phytotherapy today and these plants.

Phytotherapy studies have been conducted on 288 plants found only in the herbarium in this book. The distribution of these plants whose phytotherapy has been studied in Turkey, the region where they were collected, the parts used, their active compounds, and their medicinal effect values are explained. In addition, plants that have recently gained new importance in current phytotherapy in Turkey and their effects are included and introduced with 288 original color pictures taken by us, with their phytotherapeutic properties written next to them.
