The Spiritual Exegesis of the Qur'an in the Context of the Articles of Faith: The Example of Risale-i Nur
The Holy Qur'an, with its divine essence and universal structure, is a timeless message containing principles and guidelines that can offer solutions to all the diverse problems of humankind across different eras. However, for humanity to connect harmoniously with the guiding light of the Qur'an, its life-giving principles and truths must be conveyed in each era using a style and methodology appropriate to the understanding of that time. The fact that Islamic scholars have employed a style, approach, and methodology that considers the spirit and understanding of their time in the works they have authored to offer Qur'anic prescriptions for the problems of their era is a concrete manifestation of their awareness of this reality.
One such scholar is Bediüzzaman Said Nursî, who lived in the last century. Witnessing firsthand the repercussions of the global crisis in the Islamic world accompanying modern times, Bediüzzaman Said Nursî diagnosed the root of this crisis to be a deeper problem of faith. He pointed to the Qur'an and its radiant truths as the address for escaping this spiritual turmoil engulfing the entire world. Believing that modern man would only find the peace he seeks in the illuminating climate of Qur'anic truths, Nursî, in the Risale-i Nur which he authored to bring humanity into contact with these truths, expounded upon the verses concerning the articles of faith in the Qur'an with a truth-oriented understanding.
In this study, the nature of Risale-i Nur, which has been a constant subject of debate due to its different structure from classical exegeses, the relationship between the Qur'an and Risale-i Nur, and the principles upon which Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's understanding of exegesis is based from a methodological perspective have been examined.
