Fundamentals and Practices for Safe and Secure Work with Industrial Robots

The Fundamentals and practices governing safe work with industrial robots, which began to develop in the 1960s and have continued to evolve to the present day, have gained even greater importance with the acceleration of digitalization, particularly following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Collaborative robots, one of the key components of Industry 4.0 and widely used for routine and repetitive tasks, began to be increasingly deployed alongside conventional industrial robots during the pandemic across a wide range of sectors, from healthcare and food production to automotive and metal industries.

The need to ensure that these robots could be used safely throughout their introduction and implementation processes highlighted the importance of acquiring greater knowledge, particularly with regard to safe human–robot collaboration. In response to growing demand, we therefore revisited our previously published book, titled “An Occupational Safety Approach to Collaborative Industrial Robots,” and rewrote it with more comprehensive and detailed information on practical applications and safety.

The first two editions were published as follows: the 1st Edition in February 2021 by Efe Akademi (Turkish), and the 2nd Edition in March 2022 by İKSAD Publishing House (Turkish).
