9th International Communication Days Symposium on Communication Studies in the Digital Age: Book of Abstracts

Humanity is experiencing its second technological era. Digital technologies have entered use in almost all aspects of human and social life. The field of communication and media benefits the most from this. With the impact of digital communication technologies, the media sector has entered a significant transformation process in terms of form, content, and structure. This transformation in the media sector has also necessitated change and transformation in institutions providing communication education. Accordingly, on one hand, updates need to be made to the curriculum structure of communication education in relation to digital technologies, and on the other hand, academic studies in the field of communication need to make new openings in the direction of digitalization and gain new perspectives.
This transformation and change process within the communication and media field, centered on digitalization, was thoroughly discussed at the
9th International Communication Days within the scope of the Symposium on Communication Studies in the Digital Age. Numerous academics, researchers, and media professionals from various countries participated with paper presentations in the symposium held by Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication between May 16-18, 2022.

In the presentations made within the scope of the Symposium on Communication Studies in the Digital Age, communication sciences and media were discussed in almost all their aspects. The future of traditional mass media such as radio, television, and newspapers was evaluated. The evolution of media forms, referred to as new media, alongside traditional media, was discussed from various perspectives. The potential impacts of new media forms, developed under the influence of digital technologies, on people and society were evaluated. The question of where digital technologies, which have become dominant in all aspects of life with a revolutionary character following the Covid-19 pandemic, are leading humanity was sought to be answered with a communication focus. The positive and negative effects of digital technologies, which have besieged human and social life in all its aspects, were examined in detail. While discussions were held on how digitalization will affect the field of communication sciences, the necessity of new theoretical and conceptual openings in the field was particularly emphasized.

The topics discussed at the symposium, where communication and media were addressed in various aspects centered on digitalization, and the evaluations made are shared with the relevant public through books published as video archives and as books of abstracts and full paper texts. Thus, the presentations and views put forth at the symposium are expected to contribute to both the field of communication sciences for the 9th International Communication Days and to social sciences in general.
