9th International Communication Days Symposium on Communication Studies in the Digital Age
The development and adoption of digital technologies have affected almost all aspects of life. This impact was felt much more strongly with the pandemic process. The media and communication sector became the sector most affected by these changes and transformations. The transformation of mass communication tools with the advent of new technologies necessitated the reorganization of mass communication institutions, i.e. the media, in terms of both their corporate structure and production processes. While traditional media channels such as newspapers, radio, and television were restructured under the influence of digital technologies, some new media forms and channels that were previously unknown also entered the field of use. While some of the new media channels integrated with some traditional media, some new media channels also took their place in the media sector as new structures.
These transformation and change processes, which have occurred at various levels of mass communication as well as human and societal communication due to digitalization, necessitate the reorganization of media and communication education. For this reason, institutions providing communication education have had to re-examine their curriculum structures. On the other hand, the need for communication scientists to develop new concepts and theories to explain, elucidate, and define these new developments in the field of media and communication has become apparent. Indeed, we are witnessing the development of many new concepts, models, and theories in the field of media and communication centered around digital technologies and new media concepts.
The 9th International Communication Days / Symposium on Communication Studies in the Digital Age aimed to discuss both the impact of digital technologies on life practices and their effects on the field of media and communication. The symposium, which invited renowned academics in the field of communication as keynote speakers, also saw participation from a large number of academics with their papers. The symposium, held in a hybrid format (zoom-webinar and face-to-face) due to pandemic conditions, was actively attended and presented by approximately 350 academics from various universities in Turkey and around the world. At the symposium, which was followed by many academics and students, the effects of digital technologies on the field of media and communication were discussed in various aspects, and possible future directions of communication studies were debated.
