8th International Communication Days Symposium on Crisis Communication in the Digital Age
The world has entered the digital age. Over the last twenty years, digitization has shown its effect in all areas of life. However, the Corona pandemic led to a revolutionary acceleration in digitization. The fact that people were confined to their homes due to the pandemic meant the beginning of a total crisis worldwide. It would not be easy for people deprived of their jobs, schools, and most importantly, their social lives to adapt to the new situation. It was precisely at this point that digital technologies came to humanity's aid. This new distance-oriented way of life, with the support of digital technologies, ceased to be a crisis for humanity and was defined as the new normal. The pandemic was the cause, but the result was a complete digital revolution.
Indeed, people experience panic in all crisis situations. This often leads to social chaos. Maintaining high morale and motivation through communication is of great importance in overcoming the crisis with less damage. Communication-oriented studies conducted in various crisis and chaos situations provide evidence in this direction. This has also laid the groundwork for crisis communication to become a specialized field in itself. Thus, the main theme of the 8th International Communication Days was determined as Crisis Communication in the Digital Age . On one hand, the panic situation people entered due to the Corona pandemic and the resulting psychological and emotional breakdown, and on the other hand, the problems created by the new distance-oriented way of life, once again showed how important communication is in crisis management. Therefore, communication academicians had a big job to do. Synthesizing and studying digitization and crisis communication in detail is also of great importance for overcoming future chaos and crisis situations more easily. It is precisely for this reason that the main theme of the 8th International Communication Days, held in 2021 by Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, was determined as Crisis Communication in the Digital Age . At the symposium, held online via Zoom, approximately 200 papers were presented along with invited speakers who are experts in the field. The symposium, attended by academicians from various universities in Turkey and around the world, is an international scientific event with recognition in the field of communication sciences.
