11th International Communication Days Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism Symposium Proceedings
International Communication Days’s eleventh edition was held this year. The title of this year's symposium, held annually with international participation, is Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism. As is known, the world is currently experiencing the fourth industrial revolution. Digital technologies have entered all areas of life, and the adaptation process is happening very rapidly. Especially with the Covid-19 pandemic, the process has gained incredible momentum. Digital technologies, which were used in specific sectors, have quickly become integrated into all aspects of daily life. Colonialism, which has affected all periods of human history as a fundamental problem, is also changing its form with digitalization and expanding its influence. The focus of the digital age is information, and therefore data. For this reason, the colonialism of the digital age operates through information and data. Colonialist tendencies from countries and societies that are strong in terms of information production towards others continue at full speed. The gap between those who produce information and possess data accumulation and those who do not possess the same power is widening. This leads to results that further reinforce the problem of inequality in the world. Colonialism operating through information and data, and strengthening inequality, are becoming significant problems in the digital age world. The conflicts, wars, and struggles of the new era are also taking place around digital technologies.
At the symposium titled Digital Inequality and Data Colonialism, hosted by Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, this dilemma of the contemporary world was examined and discussed from various perspectives. Renowned academics, researchers, and scientists came together within the symposium to discuss the problems of the digital age world around the axes of inequality and colonialism, and to try to develop solutions to these problems.
The academic and media reflections of the symposium, which received approximately 300 paper submissions from domestic and international universities, are quite satisfactory. The realization of such a comprehensive symposium is undoubtedly possible with dedicated teamwork. In this regard, Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication has a highly experienced team.
Üsküdar University International Communication Days This international participation symposium, held annually with a different theme under the umbrella of Üsküdar University International Communication Days, is a scientific event that has become a valuable asset to the entire communication community and academia.
